Good news you should Use
Information over load is the level most all of us operate on
if we are in any way attached to the internet. In some ways this is great. I remember
having my VW poop out on me in W. VA and calling my VW garage (Kempthorn) and
having then tell me to watch a youtube video that would show me how to fix the
problem. I did and fixed the problem. Wow that’s good information to have at
the tip of your finger.
But so much is not good information-but it’s still at the
tip of your finger. How do we as people of faith sort out the good from the
bad? Where can we go to find the good, and heaven help us, find TRUTH? Now I would
like to focus on just one small piece of the information pie that I consume
regularly-the news.
I have found over the years news can be helpful. I’ve also
come to realize that news is coming from all sorts of sources with all sorts of
bias. This is reality. There is no news that is unbiased-no matter what the tag
line might claim. I believe all legitimate news chases the same thing: the
truth.
Here’s the problem the truth is often hard to find and even
harder to catch when it comes to the current events of the day. I tend to
employ a strategy of taking in as broad of an information swath as I can (NPR
to the Wall Street Journal) on an issue of interest. Then I turn to unashamedly
Christ oriented news sources: World Magizine, Salem Radio Network, and the
Christian Post for deeper discernment. Even these sources have their tilt but I
find they try to find the truth from a reference point of thee TRUTH (that is Jesus
Christ).
Before we can know what to think we must have a framework of
how to think. This is where the Holy Spirit must guide us through the careful
process of discerning. We have the Word of God, our Bibles, to help us filter
all the information we get hit with and our church family to discuss those
things that concern us. I pray we can discern together the issues of our day,
always remembering to speak the truth in love (Eph 4:15)
Over this last year I’ve had oodles of people talk to me
about the historic events that were happening all around us. I have tried and
continue to try to keep Jesus in the center of all these happenings-I hope you
will too. Here is a link to an excellent example of Jesus oriented reporting on
a challenging recent event, let me know what you think:
