You were missed!
I just got one of my favorite phone calls. An SMCer called to
let me know that they hadn’t seen someone at our worship times for several
weeks. They had prayed about this and came under conviction that they should
reach out. They called and got a pleasant word that this family had been out of
town and experienced some illness recently-but they would be there on Sunday
(and then it was added that this Sunday SMC would be at KMC-which was unknown
to the person who’d been missed). In the end this person just wanted to let me
know the contact was made and it was all good.
Here’s the glory of it all. Every Sunday there is any number
of people who aren’t at SMC for worship. At the very same time there are people
who notice those who are missing. May I suggest if you are one who notices-it’s
not just you. I believe the Holy Spirit is actually speaking to you as a part
of the body of Christ and saying in effect “part of me/you is missing.” I bet
if you got out of bed one Sunday morning and were missing your foot it wouldn’t
take long to notice. It’s a part of your body-in fact, your ankle that would
bang on the floor would be the first to notice!
The Bible says we are the body of Christ in 1 Corinthians 12:12–14 and Ephesians 4:1–16
and these text emphasize how connected we are to each other-but are we? In our
age of social media we have these virtual connections that make us aware of
each other but not really present. This is where the vital connection we can
make with each other every Sunday morning make us real. When that connection is
missed let’s obey the Spirit and reach out to each other-this is what being the
body of Christ is all about!
